Truly exciting opportunity to join a specialist apparel  brand recruiting for a technical Outerwear Designer with a passion for functionality, durability, adaptability, and innovation is key.

This role will involve designing clothing and gear that meets the operational and comfort needs of military and tactical personnel whilst also adhering to the latest industry trends.

The ideal candidate should have a keen understanding of performance fabrics, fabric technologies and sustainable materials. 

This Outerwear Designer role will be part of forward-thinking team where your designs will make a real impact. You will have access to inhouse sampling/production unit and can see your designs materialise.  The environment is fast paced and challenging, working on multiple projects involving a lot of development work, patents, fabrications and 3D printing.

Designer (Outerwear) – The Job Outline

  • Create original designs for military, law enforcement, and tactical apparel, including uniforms, outerwear, vests, and accessories.
  • Develop technical sketches, design specifications, and detailed garment tech packs for production.
  • Conduct research on materials, textiles, and new technologies to enhance product performance and innovation.
  • Work closely with product managers, fabric specialists, pattern makers, and the production team to bring design concepts to life.
  • Coordinate with external suppliers and manufacturers to ensure designs meet production deadlines, cost specifications, and quality standards.
  • Oversee the creation of prototypes and conduct field testing to assess performance under various conditions (e.g., extreme weather, tactical operations).
  • Stay current on industry trends, technological advancements, and competitor products to drive innovation in design.
  • Attend trade shows, conferences, and collaborate with military personnel or tactical experts to stay ahead of the market.
  • Ensure designs meet all technical specifications for fit, function, and durability.
  • Oversee the quality control process during the production phase to ensure consistency with design standards.
  • Present designs and progress reports to senior leadership, ensuring alignment with company goals.

Designer (Outerwear) – Core Skills & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Industrial Design, or a related field. A specialization in performance, sports outerwear or technical apparel (ideally 3-5 years experience in clothing design).
  • Proficiency in design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, CLO 3D, CAD).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail to ensure optimal garment performance.
  • Familiarity with military, tactical, or outdoor gear markets and an understanding of the unique requirements of users in these fields would be beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with sustainable design practices and materials. Knowledge of the latest fabric technologies, including moisture-wicking, flame-resistant, and water-resistant materials. Experience in 3D garment visualization and prototyping
  • Ability to travel within the role.
